Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 enthusiasts are celebrating after the developers granted modders access to their internal editor, fueling hopes the game could emulate Skyrim's longevity through user-generated content.
Game director Dmitry Grigorenko announced what he called "our most significant leap forward in supporting modders" on the Space Marine 2 modding Discord server.
Saber Interactive has made its proprietary Integration Studio publicly available – the same toolset used internally for gameplay development. This initial release empowers modders to manipulate level scenarios, game modes, AI behavior, combat mechanics, UI elements, and significantly streamlines the modding process.
"We promised robust modding support – and we delivered," said Grigorenko. "Watching this creative community push boundaries has been both exhilarating and humbling. We can't wait to see your cinematic campaigns, innovative game modes, and unexpected creations."
To spark inspiration, Grigorenko shared humorous concept art for a "Fishing With Daddy Calgar" minigame (shown below) – now technically feasible with these tools. Marneus Calgar leads the Ultramarines chapter.

To gauge the modding community's plans, we spoke with Tom (Warhammer Workshop), creator of the acclaimed Astartes Overhaul mod. Fresh off enabling 12-player co-op, Tom confirmed access to mission scripting tools and game component controls.
"Imagine a roguelike mode where players start with just a knife against Tyranid swarms," Tom explained. "Each victory could spawn tougher enemies with randomized weapon drops – imagine earning a Heavy Bolter by defeating a Carnifex."
While creating new factions like Tau or Necrons is possible (thanks to compatible rigs), Tom noted cinematic campaigns face hurdles without animation tools. Currently, modders are working to fulfill Grigorenko's challenge by bringing the fishing minigame to life.
This development arrives at an ideal moment. Despite Space Marine 2's commercial success, its core content remains limited to three factions: Space Marines, Chaos forces, and Tyranids. While players anticipated faction-expanding DLC (particularly hinted Necrons), modding tools provide new possibilities.
"This is Skyrim-level longevity potential," observed Reddit user Mortwight.
The timing proves intriguing following Saber and Focus Entertainment's Space Marine 3 announcement. Though both studios reaffirm commitment to Space Marine 2, these modding tools ensure the game's future remains vibrant regardless of official support.
