Chess Enters the Esports Arena: A Historic Moment at EWC 2025
The Esports World Cup (EWC) 2025 tournament lineup has a surprising new addition: chess! This ancient game joins the ranks of esports, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of both chess and competitive gaming. Let's explore this exciting development.
Chess Officially Recognized as an Esport
The world's largest gaming and esports festival will feature competitive chess for the first time, thanks to a landmark partnership between Chess.com, chess Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, and the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF). This collaboration aims to introduce the strategic game to a wider, more mainstream audience.
EWCF CEO Ralf Reichert enthusiastically described chess as "the mother of all strategy games," emphasizing its perfect fit within the EWC's mission to unite global gaming communities.
World champion and top-ranked player Magnus Carlsen will serve as an ambassador, aiming to connect chess with a broader demographic. He expressed his excitement about chess's inclusion alongside other major esports titles, highlighting the opportunity to cultivate the game's growth and inspire future generations of players.
Riyadh 2025: A $1.5 Million Showdown
The EWC 2025 event, scheduled for July 31st to August 3rd in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, will boast a substantial $1.5 million prize pool. To qualify, players must first compete in the 2025 Champions Chess Tour (CCT) held in February and May. The top 12 CCT players, along with four "Last Chance Qualifier" winners, will vie for a $300,000 prize pool and a coveted spot in the inaugural chess esports competition.
To enhance appeal to esports fans, the 2025 CCT will utilize a faster, more dynamic format. Matches will feature a 10-minute time control with no increment, replacing the traditional 90-minute format. Tiebreakers will be decided by a single Armageddon game.
From its ancient Indian origins to its modern digital presence on platforms like Chess.com, chess has captivated players for centuries. The game's accessibility has grown significantly, boosted by the COVID-19 pandemic and popular media such as streaming platforms and shows like "The Queen's Gambit." Its official recognition as an esport promises to further expand its reach and attract new enthusiasts.
