Druckmann: No Plans for The Last of Us Part 3

If you're a devoted fan of The Last of Us, eagerly anticipating news of a Part 3 from Naughty Dog, I have some disappointing updates. Neil Druckmann, the series creator, has significantly tempered expectations about a third installment being in development—or whether it will ever happen.

In a comprehensive interview with Variety, Druckmann primarily discussed The Last of Us TV series. However, toward the end, the conversation turned to the possibility of The Last of Us Part 3. His response was decidedly definitive:

“I knew this question was coming,” he remarked with a sigh. “All I can really say is that you shouldn’t expect more from ‘The Last of Us.’ This might very well be the end.”

Naturally, this leads to the question of whether Druckmann is being entirely forthright. Naughty Dog is currently immersed in developing Intergalactic, a project unveiled at The Game Awards last December. Given the absence of a release timeline, the game is likely still years away from completion. With the studio’s focus firmly set on this cosmic adventure, there’s little room for The Last of Us Part 3 in the near future. It’s entirely possible that Druckmann is being cautious or simply not ready to make any commitments. Time may shift this perspective—or he may truly be moving on. Only time will tell!

For those yearning for more of The Last of Us, the television series offers a compelling alternative. Season 2 premieres on April 13 via Max. Although Druckmann mentioned uncertainty about how many seasons will be needed to cover Part 2’s storyline, an HBO executive suggested in February that a four-season arc seems to be the ideal plan.
