Baldur’s Gate 3 has experienced a major surge in player activity on Steam since the release of the highly anticipated Patch 8, giving developer Larian the momentum to turn its attention toward its next big project.

The massive, game-altering Patch 8 launched last week, introducing 12 new subclasses and a brand-new photo mode—sparking a wave of player excitement as fans rushed to explore the updates.

On Steam, Baldur’s Gate 3 reached a peak of 169,267 concurrent players over the weekend—an extraordinary milestone for a single-player RPG in its second year. Sony and Microsoft do not publicly share PlayStation or Xbox player statistics.

PlayReflecting on Patch 8’s launch, Larian’s CEO Swen Vincke tweeted that he expects Baldur’s Gate 3 to “continue to do well for quite some time”—not only due to the player spike from the patch, but also because of its vibrant modding community.

“This gives us room to focus on making our next big thing as good as we can,” Vincke added. “We’ve got big shoes to fill.”

“Feeling good today about where we are with BG3,” Vincke said. “Patch 8 brought a lot of players back. It took a huge amount of development work, but I’m thrilled we did it. With mod support thriving, I believe the game will keep thriving for a long time. That focus on our next project is more welcome than ever. We’ve got big shoes to fill.”

Patch 8, as Larian has indicated, marks the final major update for the game, closing a remarkable chapter in its development. Baldur’s Gate 3 launched to critical acclaim and enormous commercial success back in 2023, and has maintained strong sales throughout 2024 and into 2025.

Larian stunned the gaming world by announcing its decision to step away from Baldur’s Gate 3 and Dungeons & Dragons to develop an entirely new game, which it had teased in the months leading up to announcing a media blackout to concentrate on the secretive new project.

PlayHasbro, owner of Dungeons & Dragons, has hinted at plans to continue the series. Speaking to IGN at the Game Developers Conference, Hasbro’s SVP of digital games, Dan Ayoub, revealed that with Larian moving on, Hasbro has "a lot of people very interested in Baldur's Gate."

“We’re working out our plans for the future and what we’ll do with it,” Ayoub said. “And in pretty short order, we’re going to have some stuff to talk about around that.”

Ayoub didn’t clarify whether this “stuff” would mean a full-fledged Baldur’s Gate 4 or something more experimental, like past crossovers with Magic: The Gathering. But he did confirm he ultimately wants a Baldur’s Gate 4—though he acknowledged it will take time.

“It’s somewhat of an unenviable position,” he said. “We’re not in a rush, right? That’s the key. We’re taking a very measured approach. We’ve got plenty of ideas, lots of directions we could go. We’re starting to think—okay, we’re ready to dip our toes in, start talking about a few things. And I think, in really short order—again, not over-teasing that—we’re going to have more to share on that.”
