Grinding Gear Games (GGG), the developers behind the highly anticipated action role-playing game Path of Exile 2, have recently announced further emergency changes in response to the widespread backlash against the Dawn of the Hunt update. The update, which was released earlier this month, introduced the new Huntress class along with five new ascension classes: the Ritualist, Amazon, Smith of Kitava, Tactician, and Lich. Additionally, it brought over one hundred new unique items and significantly expanded crafting options. However, the community's reaction was far from positive, with Steam user reviews dropping to 'mostly negative' due to the update's heavy nerfs and the perceived slowing down of gameplay, which many players described as a "total slog."
The most critical feedback highlighted several issues, including excessively long boss fights, skills with minimal damage output, and overall slow gameplay. Players also reported stability issues and a significant reduction in loot drops, making the game less rewarding. The forced combo gameplay, which restricts player build freedom, was another point of contention. Despite the game's initial success and overwhelming player numbers at launch, these changes have not only affected the reception of Path of Exile 2 but have also impacted the development of the original Path of Exile.
In response, GGG has promised a series of adjustments in the upcoming 0.2.0e patch, set to be released on April 11. The patch notes detail extensive changes to monster behavior, boss mechanics, player minions, and crafting systems, aimed at addressing the community's concerns and restoring the game's appeal. Key changes include:
Monster Speed Changes
- Removal of interrupt events for certain human monsters, allowing players more time to engage and use skills.
- Adjustments to the behavior of fast monsters like Werewolf Prowlers and Tendril Prowlers to reduce their relentless pursuit.
- Reduction in the number and density of challenging monsters in various acts.
Boss Changes
- Modifications to the Viper Napuatzi fight to reduce the amount and size of Chaos Rains.
- Changes to Uxmal's behavior, such as fewer location changes and less frequent use of Flame Breath.
- Improvements to the visibility of Xyclucian's effects by removing ground foliage in his arena.
Player Minion Changes
- Revised minion revive timers to prevent prolonged downtime when multiple minions die.
- Adjustments to allow Tamed Beasts to fit through smaller gaps.
Other Player Balance
- Expansion of the Rally support skill to include any melee attack.
- Fixes to prevent the consumption of Glory during skill interruptions.
- Resolution of a bug affecting the Ritualist's Blood Boils.
Crafting Changes
- Addition of new mods to runes for caster weapons.
- Introduction of a Blank rune at Renly's abandoned shop for customization.
Performance Improvements
- Optimization of ground foliage to enhance game performance.
Additionally, GGG has outlined plans for future updates, including enhancements to the charm system and the introduction of Stash Tab Affinities and Atlas Bookmarks to improve inventory management and navigation. The question remains whether these changes will be sufficient to turn the tide of negative feedback and restore Path of Exile 2 to a positive light among its player base.
