Hideo Kojima's much-anticipated project, Physint, described as a spiritual successor to the Metal Gear series, is still several years away from release. In a recent interview with Le Film Francais, Kojima revealed that it will take "another five or six years" to complete this "action espionage" game, marking his first venture into this genre since his high-profile departure from Konami in 2015.
Kojima has been inundated with offers to develop games at his independent studio since leaving Konami. He mentioned ongoing projects like Death Stranding 2 and Physint, indicating his busy schedule. Despite his interest in directing a film, a long-held ambition fueled by his love for cinema, Kojima stated that any movie project would be deferred until after the completion of Physint. He expressed a desire to direct a film as a tribute to the medium and hinted at wanting to do so while still relatively young.
Physint was officially announced by PlayStation Studios boss Herman Hulst in January 2024. Initially, there were suggestions that it might also be a movie, but Kojima later clarified on X/Twitter that while the game would push boundaries in visual storytelling, it remains a game at its core.
In addition to Physint, Kojima Productions is juggling multiple projects, including Death Stranding 2 and a new IP called OD, developed in collaboration with Xbox Game Studios and featuring actress Hunter Schafer and filmmaker Jordan Peele. Kojima is also involved in A24's film adaptation of the original Death Stranding.
Death Stranding 2: On The Beach is slated for release on June 26, with star Norman Reedus expressing enthusiasm about reprising his role in the upcoming film adaptation. Recently, Kojima shared intriguing insights into his creative process, including a concept for a 'Forgetting Game' and a USB stick filled with game ideas left for his staff to discover after his passing.
