Borderlands 4 will feature points of increased challenge, a prospect that leaves Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford feeling somewhat uneasy. Read on for details regarding the game's difficulty and its overall value proposition.
Borderlands 4: Balancing Difficulty and Value
Certain Sections Present a Steeper Challenge
As Borderlands 4 approaches its release, so too does the intensity of its gameplay at specific moments. In a Gamescom 2025 interview with Insider Gaming, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford offered his perspective on how the title's difficulty influences the experience for the series' dedicated fanbase.
Pitchford confessed to being "a little nervous," acknowledging that some segments of the game are significantly more demanding. He observed that many longtime players are drawn more to the world and characters than to intense mechanical challenges, with a majority preferring "just exploring the Borderlands or spending time with the characters."
Nevertheless, Pitchford reassured players that persistence will pay off. He emphasized, "You will find that things that were hard when you were a little chump will become trivial when you become a badass."
Pitchford Suggests a Value Proposition of $200

While known for engaging in fan discourse about pricing, Pitchford continues to highlight Borderlands 4's substantial worth, even suggesting it could justify a price tag of $200 based on its content. He remarked, "Shit, I think they could charge $200. I wish they'd give it away, because then everyone would play it."
The CEO previously faced backlash for comments suggesting "real fans" wouldn't mind the cost, which sparked frustration within the community. However, he maintains that such debates are ultimately inconsequential and won't affect the final outcome.

"At the end of the day, when I want something, and I feel like what they're asking is fair, I'll get it," Pitchford noted. "If I don't want something, I won't. Or if I think what they're asking of me isn't fair, I'm not going to do it. All the talk doesn't matter, at the end of the day, that's what it is."
He pointed to the immense hours players have invested in earlier Borderlands games as the true measure of value. "If you think about that in terms of the most amount that could have ever been spent versus the time of entertainment, you can't find a better value in the world for any kind of entertainment," Pitchford stated.

Despite lingering criticism over past statements, Pitchford's core argument about the game's exceptional value is supported by its expanded build diversity and its status as the largest Borderlands installment yet.
