Application Description

A multi-genre shedding card game that blends strategic elements from Bridge, Daihinmin, and Poker, Tichu offers a dynamic and engaging experience for four players, who compete in two teams of two. Players sit opposite their partner, forming a classic partnership setup where teamwork and coordination are key to victory. The objective is for a team to be the first to reach a predetermined score, achieved over multiple hands through tactical play and effective communication.

The Tichu deck consists of 56 cards divided into four suits: Jade, Swords, Pagodas, and Stars. Each suit contains 13 cards ranked from 2 to 10, followed by J, Q, K, and A. In addition to the standard suits, there are four powerful special cards: the Dragon, the Phoenix, the Hound, and the Mah Jong—each with unique abilities that can shift the flow of the game.

At the beginning of each round, every player is dealt eight cards. During this phase, players have the opportunity to call "Grand Tichu," a bold 200-point declaration that they will be the first player to empty their hand. Once all players have decided on this call, six additional cards are dealt to each player (completing the 14-card hand), and the window for declaring Grand Tichu closes. After this, but before playing their first card, a player may still call "Tichu" for a 100-point commitment to go out first. The distinction between Grand Tichu and Tichu lies in the timing of the call, the number of cards seen, and the point stakes involved.

Following the deal, an exchanging phase occurs where each player must pass one card face down to each of the other three players—one to each opponent and one to their partner. This means every player sends and receives three cards, adding a layer of strategy and information sharing within the team.

After the exchange, the player holding the Mah Jong card leads the first trick. They may play any valid combination—single cards, pairs, straights, full houses, or bombs. Other players must either pass or play a higher combination of the same type. The only exception is the "Bomb," which can beat any non-bomb combination regardless of type. A Bomb consists of four or more of a kind or a straight flush of five or more cards and can only be beaten by a larger Bomb. The ranking of combinations is determined by card value, with Aces high and 2s low, except in sequences where A can act as both high and low depending on context.

The player who plays the highest valid combination wins the trick and leads the next one. If that player has no cards left, they are considered to have "gone out," and the lead passes clockwise to the next active player. The round continues until two teammates have successfully emptied their hands, ending the round. If only one player remains with cards, they suffer a penalty: their remaining hand is added to the opposing team’s trick pile, and their own trick pile is transferred to the player who went out first.

The game concludes when one team reaches or surpasses the target score set at the beginning.
