At the Paley International Council Summit in Palo Alto, California, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer joined Double Fine Studio Head Tim Schafer for a moderated panel titled "Big Ideas, Small Games: Creativity Beyond the Blockbuster." During the session, led by Idilio CEO Gabriela Tafur, Spencer was asked about Xbox's use of AI. He explained that while Xbox does leverage AI, it may not be in the way many assume.
"Our current AI applications are primarily focused on securing and protecting our networks," he said, referencing the moderation of voice and text chat on Xbox Live. "At this scale, it's impossible to ensure safety through human moderation alone—the volume is simply too high. We deploy AI to help manage conversations and topics, particularly for protected child accounts, ensuring that interactions are appropriately restricted based on parental or guardian settings. This is our main organizational use of AI today. While it might not be the most glamorous application, it’s something I strongly believe in."
Regarding AI's role in the creative process of game development, Spencer noted, "On the creative side, I truly leave those decisions to the teams. I've observed that creative teams naturally adopt tools that streamline their work. A top-down mandate forcing the use of a particular tool doesn't typically lead to success. We make tools available and allow adoption to happen organically."
"On the creative side, I really leave it up to the teams," Spencer added.
He also explored how AI could enhance game discovery, telling Tafur, "One interesting area is discovery—how players find their next favorite experience. While it’s not in practice yet, we're looking at how AI tools might help. Could we use your past interactions to recommend something new and unexpected that you might love?"
"On the production side—where many assume AI will play a big role—we haven’t set specific goals for that in our model. I'm more focused on the pace of creativity and our ability to explore diverse ideas and take risks. Today, our AI use remains more operational than creative."
