Electronic Arts has informed employees that it will permanently discontinue remote work policies and implement a full return-to-office mandate.
In an internal email obtained by IGN, CEO Andrew Wilson stated that in-person collaboration generates "a dynamic energy that sparks creativity, innovation, and meaningful connections, often leading to breakthrough moments that enhance player experiences." The company now defines "hybrid work" as requiring "at least three office days weekly," with plans to phase out fully remote positions.
EA Entertainment president Laura Miele further clarified the transition in a follow-up communication:
- Changes won't take immediate effect - employees should continue current work arrangements pending transition timelines
- A minimum 12-week notice period will precede any work model changes
- Hybrid employees must work from designated offices at least three days weekly
- The company is establishing a 30-mile (48 km) radius around EA facilities
- Employees within this radius will transition to hybrid, while those beyond it remain remote unless their roles require on-site presence
- The Offsite Local work classification will be discontinued over 3-24 months
- Future remote work exceptions and hires will require CEO approval
Anonymous EA employees expressed frustration to IGN, citing concerns about lengthy commutes, childcare logistics, and medical accommodations previously supported by remote work. Some remote workers outside the 30-mile boundary worry about potential job impacts if they can't relocate.
While remote work became standard during COVID-19, several major publishers including Rockstar, Ubisoft, and Activision Blizzard have faced employee backlash when reversing these policies. EA's decision follows company-wide layoffs affecting nearly 1,000 positions across recent years.
IGN has contacted EA for additional comment on the policy changes.
