Valve Unleashes Team Fortress 2 Code: Modders Celebrate

Valve has just rolled out a significant update to the Source SDK, providing full access to the Team Fortress 2 client and server game code. This groundbreaking update empowers players to create entirely new games from the ground up. Unlike modifications through the Steam Workshop or local content mods, this update allows modders to alter, expand, and even completely rewrite Team Fortress 2 in nearly any way they can imagine.

It's important to note that any creations made with this update must be released for free on a non-commercial basis. However, these creations can be published on the Steam Store and will appear as new games in the Steam game list. Valve emphasized the importance of respecting the contributions of the TF2 community, particularly the Steam Workshop contributors who have significantly enriched the game's item pool. Valve encourages mod makers to continue allowing players access to their TF2 inventories, aligning with the spirit of community collaboration.

In addition to the Source SDK update, Valve is enhancing all its multiplayer back-catalog Source engine titles with a major update. This includes adding 64-bit binary support, scalable HUD/UI, prediction fixes, and numerous other improvements to games like Team Fortress 2, Day of Defeat: Source, Half-Life 2: Deathmatch, Counter-Strike: Source, and Half-Life Deathmatch: Source.

Back in December, after a seven-year wait, the seventh and final installment of the Team Fortress 2 comic series was released. These comics have been a treasure trove for fans, offering deeper insights into characters and stories, and they reflect Valve's ongoing commitment to one of its most beloved series.
