New Mini Controller Enables Portrait Mode Gaming!

As a gamer, you've likely experienced the challenges of playing vertical arcade games on your phone, often finding the experience less than satisfactory. Enter the innovative solution from modder Max Kern: the Tate Mode mini controller, designed to tackle this very issue. But does it truly resolve the problem?

Traditional controllers are typically crafted for landscape mode, akin to those used on devices like the Switch or Steam Deck. Yet, many classic vertical shooters and retro games require you to hold your phone in portrait mode, much like scrolling through Instagram.

Max Kern, a creative modder, has developed a compact USB-C gamepad specifically for portrait-mode gaming, also known as Tate mode. This tiny controller plugs directly into your phone's USB-C port, eliminating the need for Bluetooth, charging, or additional batteries.

Constructed with a Raspberry Pi RP2040 chip, Max 3D-printed the case and buttons through JLCPCB. If you're interested in building your own, Max provides a detailed tutorial on his YouTube channel.

What’s Your Opinion on This Tate Mode Mini Controller?

The controller utilizes the GP2040-CE firmware and functions as a standard HID controller, making it compatible with Android, iOS, Windows, and Mac. This versatility is impressive for such a small device.

However, there are concerns about the strain it might place on the USB-C port, as the gamepad supports part of the phone's weight. This could lead to potential bending of the connector over time, requiring you to support both the phone and the controller during use.

On Reddit, opinions are mixed. Some users admire the ingenuity but worry about hand cramps and comfort, while others are more open to the concept.

It's important to note that this isn't a commercial product but rather a DIY project. Max has generously shared all the necessary firmware and print files on Thingiverse and Github. What are your thoughts on this innovative little gamepad? Share your comments below!
