Final Fantasy 7 Part 3 Aims for More Concise Story

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 co-director Naoki Hamaguchi has assured fans the team is actively working to refine the final chapter's pacing, striving to keep the narrative engaging and well-paced.

In a conversation with ScreenRant, Hamaguchi addressed feedback about the series' expansive nature. When asked if specific sections in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth felt overly long, he offered a different perspective. "Regarding the duration of certain segments, particularly in Rebirth, I don't believe they were unnecessarily extended," he explained. "I think modern players simply have an abundance of games and content vying for their attention, which can create a sense of wanting things to resolve more quickly."

Despite this view, Hamaguchi confirmed the team is conscious of this criticism. "As we develop the trilogy's conclusion, we are carefully balancing how story arcs are presented and distributed to ensure the overall experience feels more concise," he added.

During the interview, Hamaguchi—whose career was inspired by playing 1994's Final Fantasy VI—also discussed other sources of inspiration, such as The Witcher series and Fable. He is currently engrossed in Ghost of Yotei, confessing, "I can't wait to get home and continue playing it."

Since Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth launched in early 2024, RPG enthusiasts have been eager for news about the next and final part of the Remake trilogy. Development is known to have begun as early as June 2022, with Square Enix stating last year its target was a release by 2027. Anticipation was further heightened when the team announced it had finished writing the story earlier this year.

Hamaguchi recently reassured the community that despite Square Enix's previous comment that Rebirth "did not meet expectations," the second installment has actually performed very well on PC and PS5. This success, he noted, is fueling the drive to create a "high-quality third installment." Co-director Tetsuya Nomura also acknowledged last month the strong demand for updates on both Part 3 and Kingdom Hearts 4, happily reporting that development is "progressing really smoothly."
