Original Ikora Voice Actor Re-Recording Destiny 2 Dialogue

Bungie has confirmed it is now actively re-recording certain lines of dialogue in Destiny 2 to bring back the original voices of characters such as Vanguard Ikora Rey.

The launch of The Edge of Fate—the first expansion in the Year of Prophecy content lineup—alerted fans that Ikora Rey, previously voiced by Gina Torres, now sounded surprisingly similar to Savathun from The Witch Queen. This was because Ikora's recent lines were provided by Debra Wilson, the actress behind Savathun.

While Bungie had previously warned players in May that English voice casting would change for Orin, Chioma, and Ikora, the studio confirmed yesterday (July 15) that although the original voice cast was unavailable during the recording sessions for The Edge of Fate, it is now working to re-record the lines of affected characters. No specific release date has been set, but Bungie is targeting a future update.

Until the changes are implemented, players will continue to encounter temporary replacement voices or even silent characters. In those cases, much like in Destiny 2: Heresy, subtitles for the narrative content will remain active.

Bungie did not directly mention the SAG-AFTRA video game performers’ strike, but did acknowledge that "conflicts" had occurred and are now resolved. This resolution coincides with the timing of SAG-AFTRA suspending its strike over AI protections. The SAG-AFTRA strike began in July 2024 after negotiations broke down between the union and major game companies—including Activision, Blindlight, Disney Character Voices, Electronic Arts, Epic Games, Formosa Interactive, Insomniac Games, Take 2 Productions, and WB Games—regarding AI usage terms. Over 98% of union members approved the strike.

Bungie recently shared upcoming plans for Destiny 2, including two new expansions and significant seasonal and core game updates available to both paid and free players, all grouped under the "Year of Prophecy" banner. This marks the first year to feature four major content releases—two paid expansions and two major updates. The expansions require purchase, while updates are free for all.

Of course, Bungie’s work isn’t limited to Destiny. The studio announced its reboot of Marathon back in May 2023. However, the alpha test launch encountered issues, and controversy emerged after plagiarized content was identified within the game. Many players have begun speculating how the game’s eventual release could reshape the studio’s future. Last month, though, Bungie announced it was delaying Marathon indefinitely due to 'strong and clear' community feedback.
