Space Marine 2's Siege Mode: Chaos Fight Less Fun Than Tyranids

Author: Noah Sep 27,2025

As Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2's Siege Mode intensifies, players are battling through relentless waves of Thousand Sons and Tyranid forces striving to reach the highest difficulty tiers. Beyond the expected server connection problems and progression-blocking bugs, the community faces a more divisive issue: facing Chaos forces.

Siege Mode pits players against alternating waves from both enemy factions - the warp-corrupted Thousand Sons traitor legion and the ravenous Tyranid hordes. Unfortunately, there's no option to exclusively fight either faction, forcing players to face both threats in sequence.

This design decision frustrates many players who find Tyranid combat substantially more enjoyable than battling Chaos forces. The difference lies in combat dynamics - Tyranids provide a visceral swarm experience, flooding the battlefield with chittering bioforms where you can carve through lesser creatures while dancing between deadly assaults from larger specimens. There's raw satisfaction in cleaving through xenos hordes with a Power Sword, countering brutal strikes, or crushing Tyranid skulls with a Power Fist.

Conversely, Thousand Sons encounters demand tactical precision. Fighting warp-enhanced Space Marines and their daemonic allies presents a fundamentally different challenge. When Rubric Terminators appear and unleash missile salvos, these engagements feel punishingly difficult. Chaos forces transform the game into something resembling Soulslike combat rather than the cathartic power fantasy of slaughtering Tyranids.

The difficulty disparity becomes most apparent at higher challenge levels. While both factions feel balanced on normal difficulties, Chaos waves grow disproportionately punishing when pushing for advanced progression tiers, while Tyranid battles remain challenging yet manageable.

This isn't merely about difficulty balance - both factions authentically represent their tabletop counterparts. Tyranids perfectly capture their overwhelming swarm tactics from the lore, while Thousand Sons exemplify the terrifying potency of Chaos Space Marines infused with warp magic. Their asymmetrical gameplay is inherently by design.

Despite these intentional design differences, player preference consistently favors Tyranid combat. Since launch, the community has voiced this preference across Operations mode and now Siege Mode, with some players even abandoning matches when Chaos waves appear.

"Is there any way to play Siege Mode against Tyranids only?" asked Think_Fan_5943 on the Space Marine subreddit. "I absolutely despise fighting Chaos and usually quit when they spawn. Since we can select Tyranid-only missions elsewhere, why not implement faction selection for Siege Mode?"

While developer Saber Interactive likely won't split the mode (as Chaos matchmaking could suffer from population issues), this debate fuels speculation about potential enemy factions for Space Marine 3. How would ancient Necron warriors challenge the Ultramarines? Could other Traitor Legions like the resilient Death Guard offer fresh mechanics? Might the return of Orks recapture the joyful combat rhythm players love about Tyranid battles?

For now, players must contend with both factions in Siege Mode. Looking ahead, Space Marine 2 will receive significant updates - while Patch 9 focuses on balancing, Patch 10 introduces a new Chaos vs Chaos PvP mode, the brutal Power Axe melee weapon, and the Techmarine class.
