Thunderbolts* maintained a robust performance in its second weekend at the box office for an MCU film, reaching a global total of $272.2 million.
The Florence Pugh-led action movie earned $33.1 million domestically and $34 million internationally, securing the top spot on box office charts for a second consecutive week. This reflects a -44% drop from its opening weekend, outperforming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (-52%), Captain America: Brave New World (-54%), and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (-54%). Thunderbolts* has grossed an estimated $128.5 million domestically and $143.7 million internationally to date.
Marvel’s Thunderbolts* promotional efforts surged last week, including an official rebranding to New Avengers. Marvel extended the on-screen rivalry between Sam Wilson’s Avengers and this new superhero team into real-world marketing. The studio aims to sustain interest in Thunderbolts* as it approaches the pivotal launch of Phase 6 with The Fantastic Four: First Steps in July.
Per Variety, Disney invested $180 million in Thunderbolts* production and $100 million in marketing. The film must maintain strong global performance to achieve theatrical profitability.
Disney CEO Bob Iger praised Thunderbolts*, calling it “a prime example” of Marvel’s renewed focus on quality over quantity.
Thunderbolts* debuted with a $76 million domestic opening, a solid but not stellar start compared to other MCU films. It surpassed Eternals ($71 million) and Ant-Man and the Wasp ($75 million), both deemed underperformers, but trailed behind most MCU opening weekends.
Thunderbolts* has resonated well with audiences and critics alike. IGN’s Thunderbolts* review gave it a 7/10, noting: “Thunderbolts* balances a darker, introspective side with a lighter one, excelling when it delves into the characters’ deepest memories.”
Disney hopes positive buzz will drive Thunderbolts* to outperform Captain America: Brave New World, which saw a sharp decline. Recent Marvel films have struggled, with exceptions like the billion-dollar Deadpool & Wolverine.
