GameStop Stumbles With Switch 2 Stapler Error

Author: Brooklyn Oct 21,2025

Remember GameStop's infamous Switch 2 launch mishap? Hundreds of customers received Nintendo's new console with receipts stapled right through their screens.

The retail giant hasn't forgotten either, cleverly referencing the blunder in its latest Switch 2 restock advertisement.

"Staples not included," quips GameStop's social media post promoting fresh console inventory. The promotional image features a Switch 2 alongside a red stapler conspicuously labeled "Do Not Use On Box."

Responses to the ad have been mixed - while some appreciate the humor, others criticize spotlighting an expensive error that destroyed thousands in merchandise.

IGN initially broke the stapler story during the console's East Coast launch, with most reports tracing back to a single Staten Island GameStop location.

Affected buyers shared their frustration upon discovering punctured screens while unboxing their purchases - damage caused by receipts being forcibly attached to the Switch 2's thin packaging.

This marks GameStop's second attempt at damage control humor. Previously, their social team addressed what they called "an isolated incident" while sharing an Office Space GIF featuring confiscated staplers.

"All affected consoles have been replaced," GameStop assured concerned customers in reply tweets. When one user jokingly suggested auctioning the offending stapler, the account responded with a thinking emoji.

Despite GameStop framing this as an isolated incident, IGN has received reports of similar damage from other retailers. Critics question Nintendo's packaging design choice that leaves screens exposed in transit.

Nintendo declined specific comment when contacted by IGN, directing inquiries back to GameStop's statements.
