If you’re a fan of retro gaming, you’ll be thrilled to hear that the Nintendo GameCube is set to make its debut on the Nintendo Switch Online platform with the release of the Nintendo Switch 2. Alongside this exciting addition, a classic GameCube controller is also in the works. However, a closer look at the fine print suggests that this new GameCube controller for the Switch 2 may officially be intended solely for use with GameCube games.
A statement spotted in the UK version of the Switch 2 GameCube controller trailer (thanks to VGC) reads: "The controller is only compatible with Nintendo GameCube - Nintendo Classics." This implies that the GameCube controller will function optimally when playing GameCube titles through the Switch 2 Online Expansion Pack and may not work with other games on the Switch 2.
As noted by VGC, it’s worth remembering that previous Nintendo controllers with similar disclaimers have not been strictly limited in functionality. Players have often found ways to make retro controllers work in various scenarios. Additionally, the same disclaimer does not appear in the Nintendo of America version of the trailer. This is intriguing, especially since the classic GameCube controller is equipped with enough buttons to handle many common gameplay inputs on the Switch 2. It could simply be a matter of setting expectations or preventing potential frustration if users attempt to use the controller for unintended purposes, such as navigating menus like a mouse.
Even if this particular GameCube controller doesn’t appeal to you, rest assured that Nintendo has confirmed the GameCube Controller Adapter will be compatible with the Switch 2 dock via USB port. Those who purchased the adapter during the Wii U era are certainly making good use of it.
