Paul Rudd Nostalgically Promotes Nintendo Switch 2, Echoing 90s SNES Ad

Nintendo has enlisted actor Paul Rudd to generate buzz for the Nintendo Switch 2 in a new commercial that charmingly nods to his iconic 1991 Super Nintendo advertisement. In the original, a young Rudd, sporting a distinctive long black jacket, beaded necklace, and unique hairstyle, confidently strides into a drive-in movie theater. With his SNES in tow, he connects it to the big screen and engages the audience by playing classics like *The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past*, *F-Zero*, and *Sim City*. The ad famously ends with the slogan, "Now you're playing with power."

Fast forward 34 years, and Rudd, remarkably unchanged in appearance, reprises his role in the Nintendo Switch 2 commercial. This time, he enters a lively living room, Switch 2 in hand, and joins comedians Joe Lo Truglio and Jordan Carlos, along with a child who affectionately calls him "Uncle Paul." They dive into *Mario Kart World*, utilizing the console's new GameChat feature. The ad playfully pokes fun at Rudd's nostalgic attire and the dramatic flair of the original with a fog machine and fan, creating an amusing atmosphere. The commercial wraps up with Rudd delivering a new tagline, "Now we're playing together," embracing the communal aspect of gaming. The ad's cheesiness is intentional and endearing, paying homage to its predecessor while celebrating the new console's social features.

IGN had the opportunity to interview Rudd about his experience filming the new commercial. He shared amusing anecdotes, including the possibility that he wore his own beaded necklace in the original ad, and how he spent downtime on set playing *Mario Kart World*. Regrettably, he wasn't allowed to take a Nintendo Switch 2 home. You can watch our full interview here:
