Sega's iconic arcade racing game, OutRun, is gearing up for a thrilling movie adaptation, with Michael Bay at the helm as director and producer, and Sydney Sweeney also on board as a producer. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal Pictures has enlisted the Transformers maestro, Michael Bay, for this exciting project. Jayson Rothwell is set to pen the screenplay, though details about the plot remain under wraps, and no release date has been announced yet.
On the Sega front, Toru Nakahara, who played a key role in the Sonic movies, will serve as a producer, while Sega America and Europe CEO Shuji Utsumi will oversee the film's development. OutRun, which debuted in 1986, was a groundbreaking arcade driving game crafted by the legendary Sega developer Yu Suzuki. Over the years, it has seen numerous iterations and ports, with its last major release being OutRun Online Arcade by Sumo Digital in 2009. Although the series has been relatively quiet lately, Sega is actively tapping into its rich catalog, with new titles in the works for Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, Virtua Fighter, and Shinobi.
Sega has been successful in adapting its intellectual properties for the screen, most notably with the highly popular Sonic movies. Additionally, last year saw the launch of Like a Dragon: Yakuza on Amazon. The appetite for video game adaptations in Hollywood continues to grow, with films like The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the recent A Minecraft Movie setting new benchmarks at the box office.
As for the OutRun movie, speculation abounds that Michael Bay and Sydney Sweeney might be envisioning a high-octane, Fast & Furious-inspired driving and action film. This exciting project promises to bring the beloved game to life in a way that fans and newcomers alike can enjoy.
