Killer Instinct Gold has recently been added to the Nintendo Switch Online library, bringing the nostalgia of the Nintendo 64 era to modern gamers. This title, a port of the arcade fighter Killer Instinct 2, now joins the original Killer Instinct within the extensive collection of retro games available exclusively to Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack subscribers.
Originally released in 1996, Killer Instinct Gold was crafted by the renowned British studio Rare, which was a key second-party developer for Nintendo during that period. Rare's portfolio includes iconic games such as Donkey Kong Country, Goldeneye 007, and Perfect Dark, which have left a significant mark on early Nintendo gaming systems. In Killer Instinct Gold, players can choose from a selection of 10 fierce fighters and engage in various game modes, boasting "hundreds of thousands of moves and killer Combos at your fingertips."
Despite Rare and the Killer Instinct franchise now being under Microsoft's ownership, Killer Instinct Gold marks another Xbox Game Studios title available on the Nintendo Switch. Since the launch of Killer Instinct for the Xbox One in 2013, there have been no announcements regarding a new sequel to the series.

Preorders for the Nintendo Switch 2 opened at the end of April, maintaining a price point of $449.99. The demand was exceptionally high, leading to Nintendo issuing a warning to U.S. customers who pre-ordered through the My Nintendo Store, indicating that release date delivery is not guaranteed. However, Doug Bowser, President of Nintendo of America, expressed confidence to IGN that the company would have sufficient units to meet consumer demand "through the holidays."
