NPIXEL has officially announced the closure of Gran Saga, marking the end of its brief international journey. The service will terminate on April 30th, 2025, and in-app purchases (IAPs) along with downloads have already been disabled. Gran Saga, which enjoyed a successful launch in Japan back in 2021, only made its global debut in November 2024. Unfortunately, it managed to survive just six months before the decision to shut down was made.
The closure is attributed to financial instability and challenges in sustaining a viable service. While the game initially impressed, it struggled to carve out a significant presence in the highly competitive global market. The genre is dominated by well-established games with loyal fan bases, making it extremely difficult for newcomers to gain traction without offering something revolutionary. Despite its early success in Japan, Gran Saga couldn't replicate that momentum on an international scale, leading to its premature closure.
This closure reflects a broader trend of gacha RPGs facing shutdowns. Just last month, I discussed the closure of My Hero Academia: The Strongest Hero, and it's not the only one. Numerous other games have also succumbed to the pressures of an oversaturated market. With so many choices, players tend to stick with familiar titles, making it challenging for new or niche games to achieve long-term success.
For those who recently made purchases and are seeking refunds, you have until May 30th to submit an inquiry. However, refunds may not be possible if you've already used the purchased items or due to other store policies.
If you were among the players exploring the world of Ethprozen, this farewell is undoubtedly tough, but it's a recurring theme in the mobile gaming industry.
