Mortal Kombat 1's development chief, Ed Boon, recently stirred excitement in the gaming community by sharing a sneak peek of the T-1000 Terminator's Fatality on social media. This reveal coincides with the release of another guest character, Conan the Barbarian, marking a significant milestone for the game as it has now sold over five million copies, an increase from the previously reported four million.
The showcased Fatality for the T-1000 draws direct inspiration from the iconic truck chase scene in Terminator 2, where the T-1000 relentlessly pursues Arnold Schwarzenegger's Terminator and Edward Furlong's John Connor. In the Fatality, the T-1000 uses a smashed-up truck to devastating effect against his opponent, delighting fans of the film.
Boon's tweet about the T-1000's Fatality included an intriguing comment about "future DLC," sparking speculation about additional downloadable content beyond the current Khaos Reigns expansion. This expansion, which includes the T-1000 as its final character, also features Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan the Barbarian. The mention of "future DLC" has led fans to wonder if a Kombat Pack 3 might be on the horizon, especially given the game's strong sales performance.
Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of NetherRealm Studios, has reaffirmed its commitment to the Mortal Kombat franchise. In November, CEO David Zaslav announced plans to focus on just four titles, with Mortal Kombat being one of them. This dedication to the series is further supported by Boon's statement from September 2023, where he revealed that NetherRealm had already chosen its next project three years prior but assured continued support for Mortal Kombat 1 "for a long time to come."
While many fans anticipate the next installment in NetherRealm's DC fighting game series, Injustice, neither the studio nor Warner Bros. has confirmed such plans. The Injustice series, which began with Injustice: Gods Among Us in 2013 and continued with Injustice 2 in 2017, was expected to alternate with Mortal Kombat releases. However, NetherRealm chose to release Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019 and then a soft reboot, Mortal Kombat 1, in 2023 instead.
In a June 2023 interview with IGN, Boon discussed the decision to focus on another Mortal Kombat game, citing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the switch to a newer version of the Unreal game engine (from Unreal Engine 3 used in Mortal Kombat 11 to Unreal Engine 4 for Mortal Kombat 1). He emphasized the team's desire to ensure safety during the pandemic and their commitment to eventually returning to the Injustice series.
When directly asked about the future of the Injustice franchise, Boon reassured fans, saying, "Not at all," indicating that the door remains open for more Injustice games.
