Rebellion's survival game Atomfall has proven financially successful immediately after launch, despite approximately 2 million players accessing it through Xbox Game Pass rather than purchasing directly. The UK-based developer confirmed profitability while withholding specific sales figures for the March 27, 2025 release across PC and consoles.
The studio reports Atomfall marks its most significant player base launch to date - an achievement amplified by Game Pass availability across Xbox and PC platforms. Contrary to concerns about subscription services impacting sales, Rebellion confirms the post-apocalyptic survival title recouped development costs upon release.
Looking ahead, Rebellion is exploring sequel possibilities and spin-off concepts while maintaining current post-launch support and DLC development. Studio head Jason Kingsley explained to GamesIndustry.biz how Game Pass implementation avoided potential sales cannibalization, noting Microsoft's revenue guarantees help mitigate financial risks.
"The value proposition with Game Pass extends beyond immediate sales," Kingsley stated. Microsoft's subscription platform provides built-in marketing exposure that fosters organic player recommendations - driving both engagement through Game Pass and standalone purchases from non-subscribers eager to join the conversation.
While Microsoft maintains confidentiality regarding specific Game Pass financial arrangements, the model clearly benefits both parties: developers gain financial security and exposure, while Microsoft strengthens its subscription offering's content library. The service reportedly reached 34 million subscribers as of February 2024.
IGN praised Atomfall's successful blending of survival and action elements in its review: "This gripping adventure synthesizes the best qualities of Fallout and Elden Ring into something refreshingly original."
