Xbox Keystone

A recently unearthed patent offers a glimpse into the design of the cancelled Xbox Keystone console. While previously hinted at by Phil Spencer, the Keystone may never see the light of day.

During the Xbox One era, Microsoft explored various strategies to recapture lapsed gamers. This included the launch of Game Pass, a service that has since expanded significantly and continues with the Xbox Series X/S. Prior to Game Pass, Games With Gold provided free games to Xbox users. Games With Gold ended in 2023, coinciding with the introduction of multiple Game Pass membership tiers. Following Game Pass's success, Xbox alluded to a dedicated console for cloud-streaming Game Pass content. A newly discovered patent reveals this console's potential design and functionality.

Windows Central recently uncovered the patent detailing the Xbox Keystone, envisioned as a streaming device akin to Apple TV or an Amazon Fire TV Stick. The patent includes multiple images showcasing the Keystone's design. A top-down view reveals a circular pattern reminiscent of the Xbox Series S. The front panel features an Xbox power button and a rectangular slot, possibly a USB port. The rear panel includes an ethernet port, HDMI port, and an oval connector, likely for the power cable. A side-mounted button suggests controller pairing functionality, while ventilation holes are located on the back and bottom. A circular base elevates the device for optimal airflow.

Why the Xbox Keystone's Cancellation?

Microsoft has been conducting xCloud tests since 2019, a process that likely aimed to optimize the Keystone's performance. The Keystone's projected price point was between $99 and $129, a target Microsoft couldn't meet. This suggests the technology needed to stream Xbox Game Pass games via xCloud exceeded the cost constraints. Considering Xbox consoles are often sold at or near cost, the inability to manufacture the Keystone for under $129 becomes more understandable. However, given that technology costs generally decrease over time, a future release remains a possibility.

Phil Spencer's previous mentions of the Xbox Keystone mean the device wasn't a closely guarded secret. While seemingly abandoned by Xbox, the Keystone's underlying concept might influence future projects.
