James Gunn Drops 'Woman of Tomorrow' from Supergirl Title

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow has been officially renamed simply as Supergirl, DC Universe chief James Gunn confirmed.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn explained this decision mirrors the recent title change for July's Superman: Legacy, now called Superman. He described how his creative team conducts "premortem" sessions to identify potential issues before production begins. The Superman: Legacy title was questioned during one such session.

"I'm constantly refining," Gunn stated. "Legacy was really — we conduct what we call a premortem. About two months before shooting, the team gathers to hypothetically ask: 'If this becomes a disaster, what current decisions might cause that failure?' During one session, I raised concerns about the Superman: Legacy title. Though I originally chose it, I grew uncertain. First, I'm tired of the superhero-colon-subtitle format. Second, 'Legacy' felt retrospective when our vision is forward-looking, despite the film's thematic elements. The team unanimously agreed we should change it."

The Supergirl film, directed by Craig Gillespie with a screenplay by Ana Nogueira, features Milly Alcock in the lead role. While plot details remain scarce (Alcock has avoided spoilers in interviews), Jason Momoa has playfully teased his upcoming appearance as Lobo in the DC universe. Gunn later joked about the actor's loose lips regarding the character's costume.

Supergirl — formerly titled Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow — is scheduled for release on June 26, 2026.
