Tencent, a leading Chinese technology company, has reportedly secured a majority stake in Kuro Games, the developer behind the popular titles Wuthering Waves and Punishing: Gray Raven. This acquisition significantly impacts both companies' futures.
Tencent's Increased Investment in Kuro Games
Majority Shareholder Status Achieved
Tencent's shareholding in Kuro Games has risen to approximately 51.4%, making them the majority shareholder. This follows a previous investment in 2023 and the departure of other shareholders. Tencent is now the sole external investor in Kuro Games.
Maintaining Operational Independence
According to reports from Chinese gaming news outlet Youxi Putao, Kuro Games will retain its operational independence despite Tencent's majority stake. This approach mirrors Tencent's strategies with other successful game studios like Riot Games (League of Legends, Valorant) and Supercell (Clash of Clans, Brawl Stars). Kuro Games' official statement emphasizes that this acquisition fosters a more stable environment and supports its long-term independent growth. Tencent has yet to publicly confirm the acquisition.
Kuro Games' Successful Game Portfolio
Kuro Games is a prominent Chinese game developer recognized for its action RPG Punishing: Gray Raven and the recently released open-world RPG Wuthering Waves. Both games have achieved considerable commercial success, each generating over $120 million USD in revenue and receiving ongoing updates. Wuthering Waves has even earned a Players' Voice nomination at The Game Awards.
