A few weeks ago, I wrote extensively about the Sea of Conquest comic created by Studio Ellipsis. At the time, I found it intriguing how new media was being supported by a more traditional format. It seems I didn't have to wait long for another studio to follow suit, as the upcoming expansion Warframe: 1999 has also launched a prequel comic!

Available directly on the Warframe website, the comic explores the origins of the six Protoframes that form the Hex Syndicate, the central characters of the expansion. Readers will learn about the lives of these six outsiders and the experiments they endured under rogue scientist Albrecht Entrati. The story also ties into the broader Warframe universe, all beautifully illustrated by Warframe fan artist Karu.

But that's not all! In addition to the 33-page prequel comic, you can also download the cover art as a decorative piece for your landing pad. Free printable 3D miniatures of all the Protoframes are being offered for players to assemble and paint.

Although technically an expansion, Warframe: 1999 appears to mark a significant evolution for the game. It's also commendable to see Digital Extremes collaborating with fan artist Karu, whose contributions have enriched Warframe's community and whose art now reaches a broader audience.
