Virtua Fighter Returns: New In-Engine Footage Unveiled
Sega has unveiled new in-engine footage of the upcoming Virtua Fighter game, marking the franchise's return after nearly two decades of dormancy. This new installment, the first entirely new entry in approximately 20 years, is being developed by Sega's own Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio.
The recently released footage, while not actual gameplay, provides a glimpse into the game's visual style. The video, initially shown at NVIDIA's 2025 CES keynote, showcases a meticulously choreographed fight sequence, highlighting the game's in-engine graphics. This staged demonstration, more akin to a cinematic sequence than raw gameplay footage, suggests a polished and refined final product. The visuals represent a departure from the franchise's earlier polygonal style, leaning towards a more realistic aesthetic that blends elements reminiscent of both Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6. The iconic character Akira is featured, sporting new outfits that deviate from his traditional look.
The development team, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, is also responsible for Sega's announced Project Century and previously collaborated on the Virtua Fighter 5 remaster. Known for its work on the Yakuza series, the studio’s involvement suggests a potential shift in the franchise's direction.
While details remain scarce, project director Riichirou Yamada's previous comments hint at Sega's ambitious plans for the game. The company's commitment to revitalizing the Virtua Fighter brand is evident, as highlighted by Sega President and COO Shuji Utsumi's enthusiastic statement during the VF Direct 2024 livestream: "Virtua Fighter is finally back!" The release of Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown on Steam in January 2025 further anticipates this exciting new chapter for the franchise. The return of Virtua Fighter could solidify the 2020s as a golden age for fighting games.
