Nintendo Halts Smash Bros. Dating App

SmashTogether, an unofficial dating app designed for Super Smash Bros. enthusiasts to connect, reportedly received a cease-and-desist notice right before its scheduled open beta launch.

The app was set to launch its public beta on May 15 after months in development. However, on May 13, its official account shared a melancholy Yoshi meme captioned: "We received a cease and desist." (Credit to Automaton for spotting this.)

While the developers didn't name the sender, Nintendo seems the likely source given the app's direct tie to Smash Bros.

Promoted as "the ultimate dating platform for Super Smash Bros. fans," SmashTogether offered matchmaking services to help players find their "perfect Doubles partner—both in-game and beyond."

App screenshots revealed profile options like selecting your main fighter, tracking tournament wins, and quirky Smash-themed prompts ("Seeking someone who can survive major tournament pools").

Beyond potential copyright issues, the very concept of a Smash Bros.-themed dating app may have prompted the legal action.

The SmashTogether team hasn't announced plans to pivot away from the Smash branding. Meanwhile, you'll notice this article contains exactly zero "smashing" puns—restraint we can all appreciate.
