Ryukishi07, the creative mind behind Higurashi When They Cry, has shared insights into his work on Silent Hill f, comparing the title’s blend of supernatural and psychological horror to "salad dressing."

With excitement building for Silent Hill f — the newest entry in a franchise dormant since 2012 — fans have been eager for updates from writer Ryukishi07. His recent appearance at Anime Expo 2025 in Los Angeles last month provided much-needed clarity and enthusiasm.

During a panel discussion with producer Motoi Okamoto and composer/sound designer Akira Yamaoka, Ryukishi07 explained that he approached this project differently than his usual novel writing process by anchoring the narrative around one core theme.

According to Famitsu, as reported by Automaton, Ryukishi07 noted that players may initially struggle to differentiate between supernatural and psychological horror elements, perceiving them as intertwined. However, as the story unfolds, clarity will emerge — at which point he described the game’s dynamic as resembling "salad dressing."

Elaborating on this analogy, Ryukishi07 stated that while these two aspects start blended together, they eventually separate, much like oil and vinegar in a salad dressing.

For those surprised by such an unusual comparison, rest assured you aren’t alone. Nevertheless, Ryukishi07 added that beyond uncovering clues about the town of Ebisugaoka, many elements will remain open to interpretation — a hallmark trait beloved by Silent Hill enthusiasts.

Ryukishi07 also highlighted that Silent Hill f goes beyond traditional horror and torment. Drawing from the series' rich history, it delves into deeply human themes such as love, sorrow, and more.

Silent Hill f is not a direct sequel to any previous Silent Hill games. Instead, publisher Konami confirmed on X/Twitter that this installment will be "a completely new title" offering a standalone experience "independent from the series," allowing newcomers who have never played Silent Hill before to fully enjoy it.

Okamoto emphasized that enhanced combat mechanics, combined with the striking contrast between beautiful visuals and eerie music, along with the "terrible beauty" of the monster designs, create an intensely frightening journey. Even the puzzles are described as being rooted in psychological pain and distress. Quite intense!

Set in 1960s Japan, Silent Hill f follows Hinako Shimizu, a teenager grappling with societal expectations from her peers, family, and community. As shown in the Japanese-language reveal trailer released in March, it marks the first Silent Hill game to receive an 18+ rating certification in Japan. The title launches on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series on September 25.
