Sony has announced an increase in the recommended retail prices (RRPs) for PlayStation 5 consoles across Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. This decision comes as a response to what the company describes as “a challenging economic environment, marked by high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates.”
The update was officially confirmed through a post on the PlayStation Blog, ensuring transparency with consumers about the change.
New PS5 Recommended Retail Prices (Effective April 14)
- Europe
PS5 Digital Edition – €500
(No price change for the standard PS5 with disc drive) - UK
PS5 Digital Edition – £430
(No price change for the standard PS5 with disc drive) - Australia
Standard PS5 with disc drive – AUD $830
PS5 Digital Edition – AUD $750 - New Zealand
Standard PS5 with disc drive – NZD $950
PS5 Digital Edition – NZD $860
Notably, the pricing for the PS5 Pro remains unchanged.
In light of previous RRP adjustments made back in 2022, the PS5 now commands a significantly higher price point in many regions compared to its original launch.
In Europe and the UK, the PS5 Digital Edition is now €100 and £70 more expensive respectively since launch (from €400 and £360). In Australia, the standard PS5 has increased by AUD $80 (up from AUD $750), while the digital edition has risen by a substantial AUD $150 (from AUD $600). For New Zealand gamers, the standard PS5 now costs NZD $130 more than its original price (NZD $820), and the digital edition has gone up by NZD $210 (previously NZD $650).
On a positive note, the RRP for the PS5 DualSense wireless controller with disc drive functionality is being reduced, now set at €80 / £70 / AUD $125 / NZD $140, offering some relief to users looking to expand their accessories or replace lost or damaged controllers.
