Palworld Remains Buy-to-Play: Developer Quashes F2P Rumors
Following reports of discussions regarding a potential shift to a free-to-play (F2P) or games-as-a-service (GaaS) model, Palworld developer Pocketpair has officially confirmed that the game will remain a buy-to-play title.
In a recent statement on Twitter (X), the team definitively stated that they are not altering the game's business model. This clarification follows an interview with ASCII Japan where potential future directions for Palworld were explored, including the possibility of a live service and F2P model. Pocketpair emphasized that while they are still internally discussing the best long-term strategy for the game's continued growth, a F2P/GaaS approach is not currently viable.
The developer reassured fans that their feedback is valued, stating that Palworld's design doesn't lend itself to a F2P model, and adapting it would be a significant undertaking. They reiterated their commitment to creating the best possible Palworld experience. An apology was issued for any anxiety caused by earlier reports.
The interview with ASCII Japan, which sparked the initial speculation, was conducted several months prior, the studio clarified. While CEO Takuro Mizobe expressed intentions to add new content, including Pals and raid bosses, the recent statement focused on the unwavering commitment to the buy-to-play model. Future development will be supported by potential DLC and cosmetic skins, a decision that will be further discussed with the community.
Separately, a potential PS5 version of Palworld was listed in announcements for the upcoming Tokyo Game Show 2024 (TGS 2024). However, it's important to note that this list, published by the Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association (CESA), is not considered definitive.
