Nosferatu Maestro Robert Eggers May Write and Direct a Christmas Carol Remake for Willem Dafoe to Play Scrooge

Now here’s an intriguing filmmaker-studio twist. Robert Eggers, the mastermind behind The Witch and Nosferatu, is being considered to direct a remake of A Christmas Carol at Warner Bros., with Willem Dafoe his top choice to portray Ebenezer Scrooge.

According to Variety, neither Eggers nor Dafoe is officially attached to the project yet—but Eggers is under active consideration, and he’s keen to reunite with his longtime collaborator for the lead role. The film is currently in early development at the studio, so any production timeline is still far off.

PlayEggers is currently focused on writing and directing *Werwulf*, a period horror film in development at Focus Features, which will come before any other project. That means the *A Christmas Carol* remake would likely follow after, potentially ready to shoot just as he wraps up his 13th-century nightmare. But Hollywood is full of surprises, so nothing is certain.

The filmmaker has described Werwulf as “the darkest thing” he’s ever written, making it fascinating to imagine how he might reinterpret a timeless classic like A Christmas Carol. He could deepen the shadows he’s known for—or perhaps ease up slightly. Still, something tells me he’d push the story’s darkness to its most extreme limits. And that’s genuinely thrilling.

Werwulf was co-written with Sjon, his collaborator on The Northman and the upcoming Labyrinth sequel, and currently has a Christmas 2026 release date set. When an official announcement for A Christmas Carol will arrive remains unknown—but if they’re targeting a 2027 release, it might be closer than it seems.
