Nintendo Switch 20.0.0 Update Adds Icon Redesign, Switch 2 Transfer

Author: Zachary Nov 10,2025

Nintendo has rolled out a significant firmware update for the Switch console, laying the groundwork for the upcoming Switch 2 launch.

Version 20.0.0 of the Nintendo Switch firmware introduces several important enhancements to the aging platform, according to official patch notes published on Nintendo's website. These changes are designed to facilitate a smooth transition to next June's Switch 2 release.

The update prominently features a new system transfer option located in System Settings, allowing seamless data migration from Switch to Switch 2 via local wireless connection.

For users who need to part with their current Switch before obtaining a Switch 2, Nintendo provides an alternative solution - uploading transfer data to secure servers for later retrieval on the new console.

Be aware that initiating this server transfer will factory reset your original Switch. Nintendo advises only using this method if you're certain you'll soon have a Switch 2. Otherwise, it's safer to wait and perform a direct transfer between consoles after purchasing the new system.

While some users planning to upgrade welcome this convenient transfer option, others have raised concerns about mandatory factory resets and potential data loss when using Nintendo's cloud transfer service.

The update also refreshes several user profile icons, including a new Donkey Kong design matching his appearance in upcoming Switch 2 exclusives Donkey Kong Bananza and Mario Kart World.
