Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons May Function as Computer Mice

Recent circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons might offer a novel functionality: operating as computer mice. While the widespread adoption of this feature by game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative controller designs.

The evidence originates from Vietnamese customs data obtained by Famiboards user LiC, who has previously uncovered information about Nintendo's parts suppliers. This data, a source of numerous Switch 2 rumors, recently revealed mentions of polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles" and intended "to stick to game console handles." This terminology, typically associated with computer mice, hints at the potential mouse-like functionality.

LiC identified two "mouse sole" model numbers: LG7 and SML7. These numbers haven't been found in public component databases, suggesting they are new, unreleased products. The data indicates both tapes are 90 x 90mm, potentially large enough to cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, though trimming would likely be necessary.

Not a First for Handheld Consoles

While innovative for Nintendo, a mouse-like controller mode isn't unprecedented. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, already features this capability with its right controller, which transforms into a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even includes a plastic piece to facilitate smoother surface movement in this mode.

The Legion GO also boasts magnetic rails for attaching controllers, a feature also rumored for the Switch 2. These similarities suggest the Legion GO might offer a preview of Nintendo's hybrid console design.
