Nintendo Reveals Switch 2 Game Cards May Only Offer Download Keys

Nintendo has recently announced that the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 will introduce a new type of game card known as game-key cards. Unlike traditional cartridges, these cards will not contain the full game data but will instead provide a key for downloading the game. This shift in strategy was detailed in a customer support post following the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct event, which showcased the new console set to launch in June.

For those accustomed to purchasing physical Switch games, the process remains largely the same, but there are key differences with these new game-key cards. When you insert a game-key card into your Switch 2, you'll need to download the actual game data, as the card itself only contains a download key. These cards will be clearly labeled on the front of their packaging, ensuring consumers are aware of what they're buying.

Concerns have arisen about the potential for these cards to replace all standard cartridges. However, early indications suggest that not all games will utilize this method. For instance, while games like Street Fighter 6 and the Bravely Default remaster feature the game-key card disclaimer, others such as Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza do not.

It seems Nintendo intends to use game-key cards primarily for larger games that might benefit from the download approach, such as Hogwarts Legacy or Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Notably, CD Projekt Red has confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition will ship with a full game card, utilizing 64 GB of storage on the Switch 2's launch day.

During the Switch 2 Direct, Nintendo emphasized the enhanced capabilities of their new red game cards, boasting faster data reading speeds compared to the original Switch. This focus on improved technology suggests that not all cartridges will be simple key containers. Nintendo has previously experimented with game cards requiring additional downloads, as seen with games like LA Noire and NBA 2K18 on the original Switch.

As the launch date of June 5, 2025, approaches, more details about the use of game-key cards will likely emerge. For now, Nintendo fans can look forward to the innovative features the Switch 2 promises to bring. For a comprehensive overview of all the announcements from the Direct, click here.
