Universal Pictures has reportedly tapped Joseph Kosinski to direct a new Miami Vice film, as first reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
Nightcrawler writer-director Dan Gilroy is set to pen the script, working from an initial draft by Top Gun: Maverick screenwriter Eric Warren Singer. Gilroy has recently been writing multiple episodes of the Star Wars series Andor, which was created by his brother, Tony.
The original Miami Vice was a highly influential NBC police drama created by Anthony Yerkovich and produced by Michael Mann, airing for five seasons from 1984 to 1989. Starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as Miami detectives Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs, the series is widely celebrated for redefining the visual style, atmosphere, and soundscape of television.
The property was previously adapted into a 2006 feature film directed by Michael Mann (Heat, Collateral), starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell.
Specific plot details remain under wraps at this early stage. The new Miami Vice project will not be Kosinski's next film following the June release of his upcoming F1 racing movie.
This extended timeline should give the director ample opportunity to select the perfect Ferrari for the job.
