DC Studios head James Gunn has stepped in to set the record straight: contrary to online chatter, the "Waller" TV series is actively moving forward. The producer directly addressed the speculation on Threads, responding with a simple "yes" when a fan asked if rumors of the show being retooled into a "Checkmate" series were false.
When another user sought explicit confirmation, asking, "So Waller is still in development?" Gunn again responded with a definitive "yes."
This firm update from the DCU co-chair is welcome news, especially after he recently acknowledged the project faced creative challenges during development. "Frankly, Waller has encountered a couple of setbacks," Gunn noted at a DC Studios press event with Peter Safran in February.
Specific plot details remain under wraps. Initially announced in January 2023 as part of the new DCU slate, the series is a "Peacemaker" spinoff. It plans to follow the consequences of Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks)—Amanda Waller's (Viola Davis) daughter—publicly revealing Task Force X. The 2023 Hollywood strikes, however, forced significant rewrites to align with the updated DCU timeline, causing major production delays.
"Waller" is being developed by writers Christal Henry ("Watchmen") and Jeremy Carver ("Doom Patrol"). While public information is still limited, Gunn's clear confirmation marks significant progress for the series, raising hopes for a potential release next year.
