It seems *Death Stranding* is expanding its reach beyond gaming and live-action cinema into the world of anime. With *Death Stranding 2: On the Beach* set to release in June 2025, director Hideo Kojima has hinted at yet another adaptation of his groundbreaking title—this time in animated form.
In a recent interview with *Vogue Japan*, translated via VGC, Kojima discussed his ongoing collaboration with A24 on the live-action film adaptation of *Death Stranding*. While detailing his cinematic ambitions, he casually confirmed the development of an anime version as well. Here’s what he said:
“I am also currently working with A24 on a live-action film adaptation of 'DEATH STRANDING'. When it comes to film adaptations of games, there have been recent films like 'The Last of Us' that keep the plot of the original intact, and films like 'The Super Mario Bros. Movie' that are more like a service to game fans. Each of these works has its own merits, but as a film lover, I want to pursue expression as a film. I am aiming to make 'DEATH STRANDING' in a way that can only be done as a film, and that will win awards at the Cannes Film Festival and the Venice Film Festival. In fact, we are also currently working on an anime adaptation.”
Although no specific anime studio was named, this revelation confirms yet another creative venture for the *Death Stranding* universe. The idea of a Studio Trigger or Production I.G. take on the franchise opens up exciting possibilities for visual and narrative interpretation.
Back in 2023, A24 officially announced their partnership with Kojima Productions to bring *Death Stranding* to the big screen. At the time, Kojima emphasized that the movie wouldn’t be a direct translation of the game, stating: “The intention is that our audience will not only be fans of the games, but our film will be for anyone who loves cinema. We are creating a *Death Stranding* universe that has never been seen before, achievable only through the medium of film—it will be born.”
More recently, *A Quiet Place: Day One* director Michael Sarnoski joined the project to write and direct the film adaptation. Meanwhile, star Norman Reedus—who plays protagonist Sam Porter Bridges—has expressed interest in reprising his role if given the opportunity.
With multiple formats now in development, the future of *Death Stranding* looks more expansive than ever. The anime adaptation offers a fresh canvas for exploring the game’s unique themes and visuals, potentially bringing new depth to an already iconic experience.
As anticipation builds for *Death Stranding 2: On the Beach*, set to launch June 26, 2025 on PlayStation 5, fans have plenty to look forward to. If you're eager to learn more about the sequel, check out our in-depth hands-on impressions after spending over 30 hours with the game.
