A former Rockstar Games veteran has weighed in on recent rumors about a potential GTA 4 re-release for modern consoles, suggesting the classic title deserves a full remaster.
Industry Veteran Calls for GTA 4 Remaster
The speculation began when renowned GTA insider Tez2 hinted that Rockstar might be preparing a modern port of GTA 4 - possibly explaining why the company recently took down a fan-made Liberty City mod for GTA 5.
It's important to note that Rockstar hasn't confirmed any plans regarding GTA 4, and such a release would be unexpected given their current focus on developing GTA 6.

Obbe Vermeij, Rockstar's former technical director (1995-2009) who worked on GTA 4, responded to the rumors on social media. While unaware of any current plans, he strongly advocated for a remaster: "It's a great game and there have been numerous successful remasters recently," possibly referencing titles like The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered.
"I would love to see it get updated," Vermeij continued. "Niko remains the best protagonist in any GTA game, in my opinion." He speculated that if Rockstar were to pursue this, they might rebuild GTA 4 using their latest Rage engine technology.
Why a GTA 4 Remaster Seems Unlikely
While intriguing, Rockstar hasn't hinted at any GTA 4 project. The studio's resources are fully committed to GTA 6's development. Even with Rockstar's vast capabilities, simultaneously working on GTA 6 and a GTA 4 remaster would present significant challenges.
Rockstar could potentially outsource the project, as they did with Red Dead Redemption's port. However, releasing a GTA 4 remaster around GTA 6's fall 2025 launch seems counterproductive, as it would compete for players' attention with their flagship title.
Liberty City's Future in GTA 6
Some fans speculate that Liberty City might appear in GTA 6 either at launch or as post-release DLC. While GTA 6 is primarily set in Vice City (Miami) and Leonida (Florida), Rockstar could potentially revisit their rendition of New York City from GTA 4.
