Reviews & Mini-Views
Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)
Konami's recent track record with classic game collections has been exceptional, and the Castlevania franchise has benefited greatly. Castlevania Dominus Collection, the third in the series on modern platforms, focuses on the Nintendo DS trilogy. Developed by M2, it delivers the usual high quality, but offers even more, potentially making it the most essential Castlevania compilation to date.
The Nintendo DS Castlevania games hold a unique place in the franchise's history. Each title boasts a distinct identity, creating a surprisingly diverse collection. Dawn of Sorrow, a direct sequel to Aria of Sorrow, initially suffered from clunky touchscreen controls, thankfully addressed in this release. Portrait of Ruin cleverly integrates touchscreen elements into a bonus mode, utilizing a dual-character mechanic. Order of Ecclesia significantly departs from its predecessors, offering increased difficulty and design reminiscent of Simon's Quest. All three are excellent games.
This collection marks the culmination of Koji Igarashi's era of exploration-focused Castlevania games. While each title possesses its own merits, the collection also highlights the series' potential creative fatigue at the time. The distinctive nature of these games may reflect Igarashi's experimentation or a desperate attempt to recapture audience interest. Regardless, the games are well-crafted and enjoyable.
Remarkably, these aren't emulated but are native ports, enabling M2 to implement enhancements. The annoying touchscreen controls in Dawn of Sorrow are replaced with button presses, and the game displays the main screen, status screen, and map simultaneously. These improvements significantly enhance the gameplay experience, particularly in Dawn of Sorrow, elevating it to a top-tier Castlevania title for many.
The collection is packed with options and extras. Players can select game regions, customize button mapping, and choose between stick-based movement and touch cursor control. A charming credits sequence showcases the unsung heroes, and a gallery features art, manuals, and box art. A music player allows custom playlist creation, and each game includes a comprehensive compendium. The only minor drawback is the limited screen arrangement options. Overall, this is an exceptional way to experience these fantastic games at an incredible price.
But the surprises don't end there! The notoriously difficult arcade game, Haunted Castle, is included. This brutal, yet musically brilliant title is complemented by a complete remake, Haunted Castle Revisited, created by M2. This remake offers a fresh, enjoyable experience while retaining the spirit of the original. It's a remarkable addition to an already impressive collection.
Castlevania Dominus Collection is a must-have for Castlevania fans. The inclusion of a fantastic new game alongside the meticulously remastered DS titles makes it an exceptional value. If you're unfamiliar with Castlevania, this is a perfect starting point. Another stellar collaboration between Konami and M2.

Shadow of the Ninja – Reborn ($19.99)
My experience with Shadow of the Ninja – Reborn has been a mixed bag. While Tengo Project's previous releases have been largely successful, this remake of an 8-bit title presents unique challenges. The improvements are substantial, including enhanced visuals, refined weapon systems, and differentiated playable characters. It's undoubtedly superior to the original, capturing its essence while modernizing the gameplay. Fans of the original will undoubtedly appreciate this enhanced version.
However, those who found the original game merely decent may not find Reborn significantly more compelling. The improvements, such as simultaneous access to both the chain and sword, and the revamped inventory system, enhance the experience. The presentation is excellent, masking its 8-bit origins. Despite these enhancements, the game retains a challenging difficulty curve, and its relatively short length might leave some wanting.
Shadow of the Ninja – Reborn is another solid effort from Tengo Project, representing a significant improvement over its predecessor. The decision to purchase it hinges on one's appreciation for the original game. While enjoyable, it's not essential for those unfamiliar with the series.
SwitchArcade Score: 3.5/5
Pinball FX – The Princess Bride Pinball ($5.49)
Two quick reviews of the newly released Pinball FX DLC tables. The Princess Bride Pinball stands out with its inclusion of voice clips and video clips from the movie. Mechanically sound and faithful to the source material, it's a highly enjoyable table for both newcomers and veterans.
SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5
Pinball FX – Goat Simulator Pinball ($5.49)
Goat Simulator Pinball embraces the absurdity of its license, resulting in a unique and quirky table. While initially bewildering, its silly goat-related antics reward persistence. More challenging than other tables, it's best suited for veteran players. Goat Simulator fans will find it particularly enjoyable, but mastering it requires patience.

Holyhunt ($4.99)
A top-down arena twin-stick shooter reminiscent of classic 8-bit games. Simple yet engaging gameplay.
