Assassin's Creed Shadows: Revamped Parkour and Dual Protagonists

Assassin's Creed Shadows, launching February 14th, introduces significant changes, notably a revamped parkour system and dual protagonists with contrasting playstyles. The game, initially slated for November 2024, will finally bring the franchise to feudal Japan.

A New Approach to Parkour:

Ubisoft has redesigned the parkour mechanics, shifting from free-form climbing to designated "parkour highways." While this might initially seem restrictive, the developer assures players that most climbable surfaces remain accessible, albeit requiring strategic approaches. These pre-determined paths are designed for improved flow and player experience. The system also incorporates seamless ledge dismounts, allowing for stylish, fluid transitions, and a new prone position enabling sprinting dives and slides. As Associate Game Director Simon Lemay-Comtois explains, this focused approach allows for better control over character movement, particularly differentiating Naoe's shinobi abilities from Yasuke's limitations.

Dual Protagonists, Diverse Gameplay:

Shadows features two playable characters: Naoe, a stealthy shinobi adept at wall-scaling and shadow maneuvering; and Yasuke, a powerful samurai excelling in open combat but unable to climb. This dual protagonist system aims to appeal to both veteran stealth fans and those who prefer the RPG-style combat of titles like Odyssey and Valhalla.

Release and Competition:

Launching on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC on February 14th, Assassin's Creed Shadows faces stiff competition from other high-profile releases that month, including Monster Hunter Wilds, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, and Avowed. Whether it can capture the gaming spotlight remains to be seen.
