AI Performances Condemned by Nicolas Cage: 'Dead End' for Lacking Human Depth

Nicolas Cage has issued a strong warning against the use of artificial intelligence in acting, asserting that actors who allow AI to influence their performances are heading towards "a dead end." He made this statement during his acceptance speech for Best Actor at the Saturn Awards, celebrating his role in Dream Scenario.

According to Variety, Cage emphasized his belief that robots are incapable of truly reflecting the human condition. He argued that even minimal AI manipulation of an actor's performance compromises the integrity and authenticity of art, ultimately prioritizing financial gain over artistic truth. He passionately stated that the purpose of art, including acting, is to honestly portray the human experience through a deeply personal and emotional creative process – a task he believes AI cannot accomplish. He warned that allowing AI to take over this process will result in art devoid of heart and ultimately, meaningless.

Cage's concerns echo those of other actors, particularly in the voice acting industry, where AI has been more extensively utilized, sometimes recreating entire performances in prominent video games. Voice actors like Ned Luke (Grand Theft Auto 5) and Doug Cockle (The Witcher) have publicly voiced their concerns, highlighting the potential for AI to displace actors and negatively impact their livelihoods.

The film industry itself is also grappling with the implications of AI. While director Tim Burton expressed similar concerns, describing AI-generated art as "very disturbing," Zack Snyder, director of Justice League and Rebel Moon, advocates for embracing AI technology rather than resisting it.
