A fresh look at retro gaming on the Nintendo Switch, focusing on Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available on the eShop. Surprisingly, fewer ports exist compared to other consoles. This list features ten favorites – four Game Boy Advance and six Nintendo DS games – presented without ranking.
Game Boy Advance
Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)
Kicking things off with the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive version holds a slight edge, this GBA iteration is a solid alternative, offering a streamlined experience. A worthwhile play, especially for comparison, and enjoyable even for non-shooter fans.
Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)
As the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, the Mega Man Zero series emerged on the GBA. This side-scrolling action title, while initially rough around the edges, initiates an excellent series. Start here and enjoy the evolution across subsequent entries.
Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)
A second Mega Man entry, justified by its distinct gameplay from Mega Man Zero. This RPG features a unique battle system blending action and strategy, cleverly utilizing the concept of a virtual world within electronic devices. While later installments show diminishing returns, this remains a highly enjoyable experience.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)
From the Castlevania Advance Collection, Aria of Sorrow stands out. For many, it surpasses even the acclaimed Symphony of the Night. Its soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the engaging gameplay makes grinding enjoyable. A truly exceptional third-party GBA title.
Nintendo DS
Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)
Initially a cult classic with limited distribution, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge on DSiWare propelled Shantae to greater fame. This title's success ensured her continued presence across console generations, bridging the gap from an unreleased GBA predecessor (which is slated for release soon).
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)
Arguably a GBA game (its origin), Ace Attorney blends investigation and courtroom drama with humorous storytelling. The first installment is exceptional, though later entries also hold merit.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)
From the Ace Attorney creator, Ghost Trick offers a unique gameplay mechanic. As a ghost, you manipulate objects to save people while uncovering the truth behind your death. A captivating and highly recommended experience.
The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)
A top-tier Nintendo DS title, best experienced on its original hardware. However, the Switch version provides a viable alternative for those without access to a DS, offering a fantastic gaming experience.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)
From the recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection, Dawn of Sorrow shines due to improved button controls over the original touch controls. All three DS Castlevania games in this collection are recommended.
Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)
While challenging to translate from the DS/3DS ecosystem, Atlus's effort is commendable. Etrian Odyssey III, the largest of the three, is a substantial RPG well worth playing.
