Chess is a strategic two-player board game played on a 64-square checkered board arranged in an 8x8 grid. As one of the world's most popular games, it's enjoyed by millions in homes, parks, clubs, online platforms, correspondence games, and tournaments.

Players start with 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns. Each of the six piece types has unique movement patterns. The objective is to checkmate the opponent's king by placing it under unavoidable threat of capture. Games can also be won through opponent resignation, which often occurs after significant material loss or when checkmate becomes inevitable.
