FromSoftware has recently provided further details on their newly announced exclusive for the Nintendo Switch 2, titled The Duskbloods. This collaboration with Nintendo has influenced not only the game's style but also the design of the hub area's keeper, introducing a character that breaks from FromSoft's traditional aesthetic by embracing a more whimsical, cute approach.
The trailer showcased during the Switch 2 Direct this week concluded with a striking image of a winged rat adorned with glowing glyphs, gazing directly at the audience. This character, revealed to be the hub companion in The Duskbloods, piqued the curiosity of fans. Director Hidetaka Miyazaki, in an interview with Nintendo, elaborated on this new addition, stating, "That character shares a similar role with the fire keepers from the Dark Souls series. They remain in the hub area, providing the player with advice and guidance."
Miyazaki further explained the inspiration behind this character, noting, "I suppose you could say we tried doing something a little Nintendo-esque in the spirit of the partnership." When pressed for more details, he humorously added, "We tried something cute for a change. Although I will say this character is actually an elderly gentleman (laughter)."
FromSoftware's shrine keepers have historically been pivotal in guiding players through their challenging worlds, with iconic characters like Melina, the Maiden in Black, and the Doll serving as familiar touchpoints. In The Duskbloods, a PvPvE game, the winged rat's role in offering advice and guidance is yet to be fully revealed. Miyazaki teased that the team at FromSoft is experimenting with "a lot of new and interesting ideas," suggesting that players should brace for surprises when the game launches on the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026.
