The iconic Killzone franchise from Sony has been on a hiatus, but the call for its revival grows louder as Killzone composer Joris de Man recently expressed his desire to see the series return. In a recent interview with VideoGamer during the PlayStation: The Concert Tour, de Man acknowledged the existing fan petitions and shared his hopes for the franchise's future.
"I know that there have been petitions for it," de Man said. "I think it's tricky because I can't speak for Guerrilla or anything... I don't know if it will ever happen. I hope it will because I think it is quite an iconic franchise, but I also think it kind of has to take into account the sensitivities and the shift in what people want because it is quite bleak in some ways."
The form in which Killzone could make a comeback remains open. De Man suggested that a remastered collection might be more successful than a new entry. "I think a remastered one would be successful, I don't know if a new game would be as much," he remarked. He speculated that gamers might be seeking something more casual and quicker-paced, contrasting with the slower, heavier gameplay of Killzone. Notably, Killzone 2 was criticized for its input lag, which impacted responsiveness on the PlayStation 3. The series is known for its dark, gritty atmosphere and visuals.
Recent comments from Guerrilla, the Sony-owned developer behind Killzone, to the Washington Post suggest that the studio has moved on to focus on the Horizon series. However, it's been over a decade since Killzone: Shadow Fall, and the prospect of reviving Killzone or another PlayStation shooter remains an exciting idea for many fans. With Joris de Man adding his voice to the chorus, the hope for a Killzone revival continues to resonate.
