Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will launch as a physical Nintendo Switch release containing the complete base game on a 64GB cartridge.
Switch 2 Game-Key Cards represent a new approach – these physical cards contain download codes rather than game data. While packaging clearly indicates these aren't traditional cartridges, the model has drawn criticism from collectors who value tangible game ownership over digital licenses.
This confirmation brings clarity for Sonic fans after weeks of mixed messaging regarding CrossWorlds' physical edition. Sega has now definitively stated through an updated FAQ that "the retail version will include the entire base game on a 64GB game card."
The FAQ also outlines key features: cross-platform play for Switch 2 owners, save data transfer from original Switch versions, and a confirmed $10 upgrade path for transitioning to the Switch 2 release.
This stands in contrast to Square Enix's recent announcement about Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake, which confirmed no upgrade option between Switch generations and no cross-platform save compatibility.
Sega reveals CrossWorlds will boast an expansive roster exceeding thirty racers including DLC. Alongside franchise staples like Sonic, Dr. Eggman, and Shadow, the lineup surprisingly incorporates crossover icons including SpongeBob SquarePants, Avatar characters, and TMNT heroes.
Launching simultaneously across Switch generations in September, CrossWorlds will directly compete with Nintendo's Mario Kart World – notable for maintaining an exclusive Nintendo character policy. This revives the classic Mario vs. Sonic rivalry in kart-racing form.
IGN's recent preview session with Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds praised the experience: "It delivers distinctive energy – the kind that makes drifting through its tracks an absolute blast."
