Despite a Season 1 crackdown, Marvel Rivals players continue to risk account bans by using mods. Since the game's successful December launch, custom skins created via mods have been popular, transforming characters like Iron Man into Vegeta and Mantis into a goth. One mod even transforms Jeff the Land Shark into Pochita.
NetEase, the developer, implemented asset hash checking to restrict mods, explicitly stating in their terms of service and to IGN that mods, cheats, bots, and unauthorized third-party software are prohibited. Warnings about potential account issues were previously issued, and NetEase reiterated that using mods is strongly discouraged, carrying a risk of bans.
However, a workaround has emerged and is widely available online. While more complex than previous methods, it remains accessible to many PC players. Modder Prafit, who shared a workaround on Nexus Mods, cautioned users about the risk of bans, noting that while permanent bans haven't been observed, NetEase could still take action.
New mods utilizing the Fantastic Four characters have already appeared. For example, Ercuallo's mod transforms Mister Fantastic into Luffy, boasting over 5,000 downloads within two days of release (according to Nexus Mods).
A tweet from @RivalsLeaks highlights the continued existence of modding despite the added difficulty. The question remains whether NetEase will follow through on its ban threats. While no confirmed bans for mod usage have been reported, the workarounds might prompt further action.
NetEase's motivation for banning mods likely stems from potential revenue loss from skin sales, intellectual property concerns, gameplay imbalance, and potential performance issues. Prafit even suggests that their workaround requires a high-performance PC.
